MF Doom and Madlib, the two Indie-Rap superstars responsible for the mayhem of the Madvillian project, are known as much for their string of quality records as their persona-jumping. As both Indie-Rap and mainstream attempt to "keep it real" to uphold authenticity, both Doom and Madlib have sidestepped the debate, going under a variety of aliases (Quasimoto, Viktor Vaughn, Yesterday's New Quintet and King Geedorah) and releasing albums that defy easy categorization. None of these identities would matter, however, if these two artists weren't able to make them incredibly captivating. With a loyal cult of fans tracking their every move, these artists have been etching out distinct and frequently brilliant work. Madvilliany is no exception

Bio

MadlibHe is considered to be one of hip-hop's most inventive visionaries. Those who know the enigmatic artist confess he is a quiet personality, but what Madlib doesn't reveal in public, he expresses absolutely in the studio – as a very prolific rapper and producer (and sometimes even DJ). Working diligently on music at all hours of the day, he employs any number of MC and production guises.

Madlib first came to prominence as an MC in the hip-hop trio, Lootpack. That group's debut album in 1999, soundpieces: Da Antidote, released on Madlib's home label, Stones Throw Records, received much acclaim – by both critics and artists such as D'Angelo and The Roots' Questlove, who praised it as a surprising indie hip-hop triumph.

Madlib draws from jazz, funk, Brazilian, rock and any other genre whose rhythms and melodies enchant him. His work for his own projects (Lootpack, Quasimoto, Yesterdays New Quintet), for other Stones Throw artists (Dudley Perkins, Wildchild, Jaylib, Mad Villain), and other contemporaries (remixes for Bilal, Zero 7, Jazzanova) all reflect his quirky, patchwork musical sensibility. Madlib seems to balance the essence of the music he samples with a very knowing sense of a hip-hop beat, often times making music that sounds simultaneously classic and contemporary. Combined with his own abilities to play many instruments, his body of work yields a rich tapestry of sound.
