Mindtrap are a scandanavian collaborative who produce the kind of music that is normally associated with sunsets many miles further south than it's origin suggests...the album opens up with the promising "smooth". An appropriate title with its swooning baselines, beautiful acoustic guitar and rhodes. The formula continues throughout the album with standout tracks including the blissed out "Before Dawn" and the beautiful "So Simple". In fact, any one of the tracks on Northern Rooms could quite happily find it's way onto a Cafe Del Mar compilation (or similar) – that should give you some indication to the warm sound on offer here. The album could perhaps benefit from the odd vocal here and there – maybe this is something Mindtrap will explore in there next release. And while this release doesn't push any boundaries, it does what it does very well and it's the sort of music you want to be listening to on a lazy sunday afternoon in a cool bar somewhere.

Mindtrap can be described as Scandinavian chillout and ambient. One usually associates ambient with Sunsets in Ibiza First cd Northern Rooms sets itself apart by having a melancholia unexpected in the ambient genre. You sense the winter, a yearning for summer and the introspective all of which put together gives the album a unique Scandinavian vibe.

The album has taken 3 years in the making and creates a series of different moods and moodsettnings. Analog synths, peculiar distinctive guitar and dusty hip hop beats create the sound base of the tracks. The sound is “classic electronic”: Wu¨rlitzer, Moog and Arp combined with acoustic and electric guitar. Samples from old vinyl records creates a warm and melodious soundscape,- that allow you to dream and drift away.

A calm and soothing album that takes you on a journey into the sounds of Scandinavian ambient and chillout. The words warm, soft and thoughtful sum up the feel of “Northern Rooms”.
